January 2019 – Celebrating 21 years at The Mile

By Jo | 1st January 2019 | Events

It’s almost 21 years since our business began – starting off as two small huts selling animal feed, hay and straw in one, and fruit and vegetables in the other.

There have been many changes along those years, but our mission has stayed the same – to showcase a variety of wonderful products from fantastic local suppliers.

To celebrate our 21st anniversary, we’re delighted to announce our Meet the Producer Event.

On Saturday 26 January between 2pm and 5pm, we will be inviting you to join us and meet our favourite local suppliers.

Producers including Thixendale’s Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil, The Chilli Jam Man, Pocklington’s Butterflies Chocolates, Hooting Owl Distillery, Wold Top Brewery, Yorkshire Orchards, Bracken Hill Fine Foods and The Yorkshire Dales Cheese Company will all be offering visitors a taste of their food and drink.

Jo Barnes at The Mile says: “Our 21st birthday fell during the busy run up to Christmas, so we decided to wait until January to host this event. Given that the third Monday of January is historically known as ‘Blue Monday’ due to a combination of post-Christmas blues, cold, dark nights and the arrival of the Christmas credit card bills, we decided that we’d try to beat the blues and give customers something free and tasty to look forward to.”

“We pride ourselves on our wide selection of local and artisan food and drink products that people can’t buy in the supermarkets and are delighted to be able to thank our customers by showcasing some of the businesses that have supported us over the years.”

Our original farm shop and feed shed was established by Ken and Colin Barnes in 1997 to service the needs of the local farming community. We started out supplying animal feed and food from two huts on the site of a former pig farm.

Over the last 21 years, the business has evolved and now includes a purpose-built farm shop and feed shed; the 27-seater Smile Café and children’s play barn; an events space; a two-acre Camping & Caravan Club accredited site and a photo and gift studio
